This sketch by Alfred Waud is the closest thing there is to a battlefield photo of the men of the 46th in action. It shows the situation on the morning of September 17, 1862 at Antietam. Written in the center top margin, “Lt. Col. Knipe” shows the approximate location of the 46th Pennsylvania, where the smoke is the highest, and the attack of Ripley’s Confederate Brigade is reaching its apex.
